About Irving
Irving was founded in 1903 by J.O. “Otto” Schulze and Otis Brown. The town was incorporated in 1914, with Otis being the first mayor. By that time, the area was the site of two churches, two cotton gins, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. Population growth was very slow, only having 45,000 citizens by 1960.
Over the next 30 years, Irving’s population increased by over 100,000 due to manufacturing in the area, and the founding of the University of Dallas, and the Dallas Cowboys’ Texas Stadium. The city has a rich history in the sporting arena, with it’s Texas Stadium having been the home of the Dallas Cowboys for almost 40 years. As well, the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship golf tournament is hosted annually. Other annual events include the Football Bowl Subdivision conferences: the Big 12 Conference, and Conference USA.
The city has several options for those looking into higher education, such as the University of Dallas, and North Lake College. Irving includes the Las Colinas community as well, which is one of the first master planned developments in the United States and once the largest mixed-use development in the Southwest with a land area of more than 12,000 acres.
