About Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh became a city on March 18, 1816. The city experienced rapid growth as the demand for Iron and Coal skyrocketed. To satisfy that demand, Andrew Carnegie began producing steel in 1875 for the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which evolved into the Carnegie Steel Company, and later U.S. Steel which still exists today. Carnegie, one of the most famous businessmen and philanthropists of his time, was a major factor in the growth of Pittsburgh as he employed so many of it’s inhabitants. These days, the economic base of Pittsburgh is education, tourism, and services, leaning towards healthcare/medicine, finance, and technology such as robotics.

Downtown is a mix of medium sized city living and charming outdoor spaces. Bike or walk the Great Allegheny Passage trail right through the heart of the city, visit the street vendors and unpretentious grocers in the Strip District, or take the inclines to the top of Mount Washington to get a view of the iconic skyline. Pittsburgh is a city made of 90 distinct neighborhoods – You’ll find world class colleges and universities, museums, galleries, quaint shops and boutiques, and a growing craft beer and foodie scene that make it an ideal city to explore.
