About Alpharetta

Chartered in 1858, Alpharetta was inhabited for it’s natural spring, which allowed a small settlement to grow around it, and eventually become a trading post. Alpharetta got it’s name from a fictional Native American girl, Alfarata, the subject of a popular 19th century song called, “The Blue Juniata”. The town served as the county seat of Milton County until 1931, when Milton and Fulton County merged to avoid bankruptcy during the Great Depression.

Alpharetta is home to sub-offices of some of the world’s largest corporations, such as Comcast, UPS, and Verizon Wireless. Those looking for leisure activities in the area are spoiled for choice with numerous attractions and events in the area, such as the Downtown Alpharetta Historic District, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park, and the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway. The city has a large school system, with several acclaimed private schools. As well, Georgia State University, Gwinnett Technical College, and Reinhardt University have campuses located in the city. The town is governed by a city council consisting of six members, and a mayor. The mayor and council members serve staggered four-year terms.
