About Greensboro

Established in 1808, Greensboro remained a sleepy little town until the early 1840’s when rail lines were run through the town. During this time the city grew substantially, becoming known as the “Gate City” due to its role as a transportation hub for the Piedmont. The railroad industry helped stimulate the local textile industry, which used the railroad to ship it’s products around the country. The area today is home to VF Corporation, a textile company that owns Wrangler, and Lee.

Modern day Greensboro has an economy centered around textiles, tobacco, and furniture. The have an active arts community, with the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro serving as one of the crown jewels, having been a part of the local culture since the late 1920’s. Baseball is a large part of the local culture, stretching back to the 1920’s when the World War Memorial Stadium was built. Currently, the Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball team plays at the First National Bank Field.
