About Santa Monica

Discovered in 1769 and incorporated in 1886, Santa Monica was originally named for Saint Monica, a Christian saint. The town wasn’t much for it’s first 100 years, but that all changed when the railroad came to town in the 1870’s. In the 1930’s, the Great Depression hit Santa Monica hard, with just 1,000 of it’s residents being employed in 1933.

Lately however, Santa Monica has prospered. It is home to several large game development studios, such as Activision, and Treyarch. Santa Monica is one of the most environmentally activist municipalities in the nation, with it’s Sustainable City Plan of 1994. As well, the city has adopted a Community Energy Independence Initiative, with a goal of achieving complete energy independence by 2020. Santa Monica is home to some of the most widely known Californian attractions, the Santa Monica Pier, and the Santa Monica Stairs. The city also has their own film festival each year, called the Santa Monica film festival.
