About Marina Del Rey

Marina del Rey was originally imagined as a large commercial port by Moye C. Wicks and Louis Mesmer in the late 19th century. However, that wouldn’t come to fruition until 1953 when the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized a loan of $2 Million to fund the construction of the marina. Plagued by issues from day one, the marina wouldn’t be completed until April 10th, 1965.

Marina del Rey doesn’t have a large corporate presence, with only small companies in the area. Most of the local industry is surrounding tourism. The area itself isn’t very densely populated, with only 8,866 people residing within the city limits. With a mild climate, locals and tourists alike are attracted to places such as Fisherman’s Village, or Chace Park, which offers Marina Movie Nights and summer concerts. Marina del Rey is also home to the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, which offers rowing, kayaking, surfing, and wind surfing courses to both locals, and tourists alike.
