About Marietta

Founded in 1833, Marietta was originally a suburb of the town of Kennesaw. These days, however, Marietta is more a suburb of nearby Atlanta. Marietta was initially selected as the hub for the new Western and Atlantic Railroad, and business boomed. By 1838, roadbed and trestles had been built north of the city – however, in 1840, political issues stopped construction. In 1842, the railroad’s new management decided to move the hub from Marietta to an area that would become Atlanta later on.

Located 20 miles away from downtown Atlanta, Marietta offers outdoor adventures and historic attractions to its visitors. A haven for nature lovers and hikers, Marietta’s most visited outdoor attraction is Kennesaw Mountain. It has a summit elevation of over 1,800 feet and is home to a number of attractions and many hiking trails.

With six historic districts, its downtown area is home to streets and structures listed with the National Register of Historic Places. The Gone With The Wind Museum is a popular destination as well, with the museum housing the largest private collection of movie memorabilia related to the novel and the film.
